URPoint Details
A pretty fishing village on the shores of the Moray Firth and on a promontory of the Firth a few miles northeast stands Fort George.
The village is often called Campbelltown because the lands once belonged to the Campbells of Cawdor in 1574.
A charter in 1623 enabled the Campbells to erect a burgh of barony called Campbelltown which was to have a weekly market. This never eventuated and has had only fishing as an industry.
Oil was discovered off the coast the town as it is known now as a base for the construction at Whiteness Head of huge platforms for the North Sea oil fields.
