URPoint Details
The substantial ruin of a Tironensian monastery founded by William the Lion in 1178 and intended as his own burial place. Parts of the Abbey Church and domestic buildings remain, as do the gatehouse and the abbot's house. It was here in 1320 that the famous Declaration of Arbroath was signed, asserting Scotland's independence from England.
