The town was made a Royal Burgh in 1599 and it was here in 1320 that Robert the Bruce signed Scotland’s Declaration of Independence at the Abbey.
The abbey was founded in 1178 by King William the Lion, and his remains are buried before the High Altar.
Arbroath is also wide known for ‘smokies’ haddock smoked over oak fires.
