The garden had to provide food for the hungry children, so nothing exotic or luxurious was ever grown. The 19th century varieties of fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown using methods and materials of the period. Local varieties of fruit and vegetables are also featured, such as 'Early Timperley' rhubarb and 'Withington's Welter' apple - both named after nearby villages.
