Appleby Castle (HE)

Open early April to end October, daily 10am-5pm (closes 4pm in October).

Lady Anne Clifford one of the county's most famous Christian ladies at 60 years of age, spent 26 years renovating castles and churches. She rebuilt this Norman castle, which still retains the Norman keep, and also restored the parish church of St Lawrence, which contains her tomb. She also built St Anne's Hospital with its chapel in 1651.
