URPoint Details

A small village mostly of flint and brick houses set in very pretty surroundings lying off the beaten track, on the edge of the Royal estate of Sandringham, in Anmer Park.

The village has a long history before the present Royal Family bought Sandringham in 1862.

The name Anmer is thought to derive from the Old English meaning ‘duck pond’. Tradition has it another English queen, Boudeicca, fought a battle against the Romans close by at Anmer Minque.

Roman remains have been found here, and there are several ancient barrows or burial places dating from even earlier times.

One of the long distance green roads, Peddars Way, running from the north coast to Thetford and beyond, passes close to the village.

The village sign shows a Roman soldier on one side and a Boy Scout on the other.
