Amy Johnson birthplace - Kingston upon Hull
URPoint Details
Amy Johnson, CBE was born 1 July 1903. She was a pioneering English aviatrix, and flew solo from England to Australia in 1930. She completed many other solo and partnered record-breaking flights.
Amy Johnson, while flying for the wartime Air Transport Auxiliary, died in the Thames estuary, London, on January 5, 1941, from drowning after her Airspeed Oxford aircraft was shot down by aint-aircraft guns, allegedly after she did not respond to a radio challenge by firing off the correct 'colours of the day' twice.
Her death was not declared until 1943 as it was rumoured she was conducting a secret mission, however this was later revealed not to be the case, but rather due to the sad circumstances of her death. Amy Johnson reportedly parachuted into the Thames estuary, but a rescue boat was unable to retrieve her before she drowned.
