Stark remains of a Jacobean Mansion built by Mary Countess of Pembroke in about 1615. From 1620 to 1738 it was the home of Earls of Aylesbury, the last Lord Thomas being a supporter and friend of James II. The House, reputed to be ''House Beautiful" in John Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress, looks out towards the beautiful mountains and hills. The property now belongs to the English Heritage/National Trust. The Duke of Bedford dismantled the house in the 18th century, but its grand staircase was re-instated in the Swan Hotel in Bedford.
