Once an important lead mining area is now very popular with trout fishermen and in winter with skiers.
The town is perched on a steep cliff, 1400ft above sea level over the River East Allen and the riverside walk below the town passes the mouth of the Beaumont Level, a large tunnel once an entrance to a mine.
