Alfriston Clergy House, (NT)

The Tye, Alfriston , England

URPoint Details

Shop car park in the village. Unsuitable for wheelchair access braille guide. No dogs allowed.
Built in 1350, probably for a well-to-do farmer. (The name \'clergy house\' may stem from the fact that Alfriston was later owned by the Church). The first building to be acquired by the National trust in 1896 for οΎ£10.00.

The building is a rare survival of a 14th century timbered-framed and thatched house, partly rebuilt following a fire in the early 17th century oak frame infilled with laths, some covered with lime-washed daub, others with late-Victorian cement render central 2-storey hall flanked by family lodgings and domestic offices. The medieval hall has a rammed chalk floor, moulded and crenellated beams, carved chamfer-stop (in the hall) in the form of an oak leaf crown post roof.
