Aldborough - North Yorkshire

Aldborough , England

URPoint Details

Once the capital of the Brigantes, the largest Celtic tribe in Britain in pre-Roman times.
The Romans turned the village into an important camp for the famous Ninth Legion and called it Isurium Brigantum, there are several Roman pavements remaining.

The Church of St Andrew is thought to stand on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Mercury, whose statue gazes down the full length of the 14th century nave to where, in a curious medieval carving showing Daniel in the Lion’s den.
