URPoint Details
North west of Huntingdon are the villages, almost running into each other, of Alconbury and Alconbury Weston extending along the banks of the meandering Alconbury Brook across whose shallow little valley the busy A1 now cleaves its way clear of Huntingdon.
Alconbury Brook joins these two villages with its cute little medieval hump-backed structure at Alconbury and a platform structure at Weston.
Alconbury's church is a splendid Early English building and earned itself undying fame when, in the 19th century, its spire was propped up with scaffolding whilst the tower beneath was successfully rebuilt!
Local social life revolves around the village and school halls at Alconbury - the larger of the two communities - and here too is the Alconbury Hotel, a modern building close to the A1 and serving local and 'through business' needs.
On Alconbury Hill is an elaborate milestone or obelisk erected in the 18th century.
