URPoint Details
The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) with HQ at White Waltham, Maidenhead was a British civilian organisation set up from 15 February 1940–30 November 1945.
These women pilots flew all types of planes to drop off points for pilots to continue their missions, and act as emergency hospitals. They also ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points, Maintenance Units (MUs), scrap yards, and active service squadrons and airfields.
These women had never flown a plane before but were expected to fly different types of planes at a moment’s notice with no training.
