A lovely village in wooded hill country which still has stocks, a whipping post, and many old houses.
The restored church of St James damaged by bombs is partly Norman and has a fine nave roof.
Nearby at the pretty hamlet of Abinger Hammer recalls the forge ‘hammers’ of the 17th century iron industry.
In 1950 a notable Mesolithic pit dwelling of around 8,000BC was discovered and excavated.
