URPoint Details

The beautiful 13th century church of St Helen's, with tall slim spires dominate the Thameside town. The church has been described as remarkable as it is wider than it is long, and has a large nave of five aisles. Its greatest treasure is the wooden ceiling of the Lady Chapel, which is painted with prophets and kings and dates from 1390, and is unequalled in England. Also of interest is the tomb of John Roysse. The churchyard has some lovely old almshouses dating from the 15th and 18th century around it.
