URPoint Details

Thames Street still has some fine buildings of the 15th century. The town is on the site of a Bronze Age settlement and is considered to be the oldest town in England. It developed as an important market town around the Abbey.
The Abbey was virtually destroyed in Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, but the town prospered mainly due to its Monday general market. In addition to its architectural treasures, the town with the beautiful River Thames also boasts a number of bridges of historic interest notably, Abingdon, Radcot and Newbridge.

Guildhall, Bridge St, built in the 16th century was once part of the Abbey and served as the Almoners Hall.

Abingdon County Hall, (EH), Market Place, Abingdon. Open April to end October, Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 5pm. Closed Mondays & Bank Holidays. Entry free No dogs allowed.
A grand centrepiece for the market place, this 17th century building was built to house the Assize Courts and was constructed over an open market hall. It now houses a museum depicting many aspects of Abingdon.
