URPoint Details
The principal seaside resort of west Wales, Aberystwyth is also the home of the University College of Wales and the National Library of Wales.
The town centres on its castle, built on a promontory beside the Rheidol estuary. A stone pier protects the estuary which is a safe haven for fishing-boats and pleasure-craft. A promenade runs along the shore, to a cliff railway at the northern end of the town.
In term time there are nearly 3,000 students in the town — almost a quarter of the total population. Most of the college buildings are on high ground inland.
The library houses more than 2 million books and about 3.5 million documents, including the 12th century Black Book of Carmarthen, the oldest manuscript in Welsh.
